What’s up!

Sup guys, my name is Marcus. I’m 27 friggin years old now and I currently own WAKEMUSTERS, where we coach wakesurfing and wakeboarding. It’s about a year old and I’ve been loving it despite weekends and public holidays being workdays too.

When you love what you do, you don’t work a day in your life right? Lol.

Ha! You can say that! I guess I’m just lucky enough to be able to do what I love for work.

Being brought up in our Singaporean environment, I’m sure it wasn’t an easy choice to go with wakeboarding as a career path. What keeps you motivated?

That’s easy man. At the end of the day, it’s #TheCompanyThatMatters hehe. I believe in it so much that I made it the company tagline. The people, they are the ones that keep me going. 4 years ago I was apprehensive about going into this full time because of how routine it can get with the driving up and down. It was only after I started trying it out that I fell in love with the teaching aspect and it’s super rewarding to see my customers enjoy themselves.

Is it hard to balance teaching and your own riding then? Are you looking to turn pro?

Weekends are when it gets busy for me. So on weekdays when most people are at work, I get a friend to help drive my boat and I’m all set for training. I think at 27, I’m too old to turn pro. Not that I haven’t thought about it before but I’ll take it one step at a time.

Any special tricks or lines you working on?

No special tricks but definitely working on consistency of my current trick vocabulary and if possible, taking them up a notch. There is a particular trick from gymnastics I’d love to try though. It’s called “The Arabian”, basically a 180 spin to a front roll. Something you don’t see in wakeboarding where the roll or flip comes before the spin.

Oh yeah! I forgot you have a cheerleading and gymnastics background. For a flip to come after a spin I imagine it would take some serious air time?

Haha. Yeah, I was a cheerleader and BMX rider for a couple of years. I’ve been doing extreme sports all my life and wakeboarding just happens to be my first watersport. Air time is what I live for man. Those seconds in the air, it feels so damn good!

How does it feel to finally land a trick you’ve been working on for weeks?

I’m not very good with words but here’s an analogy. It’s like having a bad tummy ache, running to the nearest toilet only to find a queue. You rush to the next nearest toilet on the second floor only to find that it’s closed for washing. You don’t give up yet and you try the handicapped toilet only to find out there’s no toilet paper and you’re on the brink of crapping in your pants. You tell yourself you didn’t come this far just to do that so you burst into the Female toilet and realise it’s totally empty and clean and you get on with business. I guess what I’m trying to say is before you give up, sometimes you got to take a risk and you’ll find that things work out smoothly in the end. Ha!

Right… Moving on though, how close are you to landing The Arabian?

I’m already completing the trick and landing board first, but I let go of the handle just to be safe. I’m injury prone and I have a responsibility to be fully functional to do my job.

What’s the best part about being out there in the water then? The Bikinis?

Noooooo! The best part is the lifestyle, man. For me, it’s the one extreme sport I love that won’t get me drenched in my own sweat. *winks

What is the perfect riding setting?

The calm before the storm, the ambient beauty of a grey sky and rolling thunder in the distance topped off with the glassy buttery smooth surface of the water. Sluuurp!

Are you sponsored by anyone?

Reverie Wearable Connection is my main sponsor but hopefully, there will be more to come!

Plans for the future?

Very good question… I’ve no idea. I’ve a to-do list so, for now, I’ll take it one day at a time.
